FlexiPath St Helier - Jersey

Redlynch Leisure recently completed the installation of a FlexiPath resin bound pathway in the heart of St Helier. This project was carried out to address long-standing issues with a popular pedestrian route lined by mature trees, where traditional tarmac had become unsafe and unsightly due to root intrusion.

Project Background

The original footpath, constructed using standard tarmac, had become uneven and hazardous over time. Tree roots were pushing up through the surface, causing cracks, trip hazards and frequent maintenance requirements. These issues not only posed safety risks for pedestrians but also made repairs increasingly difficult without damaging the trees themselves.

St Helier needed a long-lasting and flexible alternative that would complement the surroundings while resolving the root-related problems. Redlynch Leisure recommended the installation of FlexiPath – a sustainable, tree-friendly surfacing solution made from a unique blend of recycled rubber and natural stone, bound together with a strong, flexible resin.

Why FlexiPath?

FlexiPath is ideal for areas where tree roots, moisture control and safety are concerns. This highly permeable surfacing system allows rainwater to drain directly through, reducing surface water and preventing erosion around trees. It also flexes slightly with ground movement, meaning it won’t crack or lift like traditional paving options.

The resin rubber and stone composition provides excellent grip and comfort underfoot, making it suitable for all users, including cyclists, runners, and pedestrians. Its natural finish also integrates well with parkland and urban settings alike.

Project Details

  • Location: St Helier
  • Client: Local authority / public works
  • Surface Installed: Flexipave – resin bound rubber and stone mix
  • Length of Path: Multiple stretches through a tree-lined pedestrian area
  • Purpose: Safe, durable path replacement resistant to tree root disruption

Results

The completed path is now safer, more attractive and significantly easier to maintain. It provides a smooth, durable surface that won’t crack or lift under pressure from tree roots. Pedestrians now enjoy a more accessible and aesthetically pleasing environment, while the local authority benefits from reduced maintenance costs.

By using FlexiPath, we were able to avoid excavation and damage to the tree roots, ensuring the trees could continue to thrive alongside the new path. The visual result is a seamless blend of functionality and natural beauty.

Applications of FlexiPath

This project highlights just one of the many applications for FlexiPath. Its benefits make it suitable for:

  • Public footpaths in parks and urban areas
  • Tree-lined walkways where root heave is an issue
  • Golf course paths and buggy routes
  • Cycleways and bridleways
  • School paths and recreational walkways
